In an outrageous violation of human values, the Jabhat Fateh Al-Sham, formerly the Nusra Front, attempted on Thursday to capture the bakery oven in the Atarib city in western Aleppo in order to control bread supplies. However, the locals in the city held a massive protest against them and forced them to withdraw their manpower from the bakery.
Local sources indicated to Aleppo24 that the local council in the Atarib city held an urgent meeting today after the attempt of the JFS to seize control over the bakery and the protests which it triggered.
The sources indicated that what frightened the locals is the monopolization of bread, which is the main food items in Syria, by a military faction, which is also the policy of the Assad regime.
People in the city fear the fact that the bakery would be struck by the Russian, Coalition and Assad’s warplanes if the JFS captured it. This would cost them a necessary and crucial source of bread on the pretext of striking the JFS.
Sources stated that the JFS made a tactical retreat from the bakery after being pressured by the protests, and that some of their affiliates have threatened them with returning and capturing it.
The Atarib’s bakery is the biggest bakery in western Aleppo. It is an automatic oven which supplies more than 20 villages and towns in the region with bread.
The JFS want to capture the bakery in order to control the will of civilians in western Aleppo, including gaining their support, mainly amid the ongoing fighting between them and Islamic military factions, who are led by the Ahrar Al-Sham, in which the JFS have goals to capture towns and villages in the liberated countryside of Idlib and Aleppo.
The JFS had previously captured several ovens in neighboring areas.
The local council of the Atarib city did the best they can and managed to fix the bakery in the city, which was stuck for several times by the Assad and Russian aircraft. The bakery was rendered unusable in February 2016 following airstrikes by the Russian warplanes, which also caused civilian casualties.
